Backdrop Printing in Malaysia: Sizes, Prices and How to Hang One

A standard printed event backdrop in Malaysia is 8 × 8 ft — 2.44 × 2.44 m — and costs RM128 printed on 340gsm flex. Eight feet is the height that matters: it clears people's heads in photographs, which is the whole job of a backdrop. Wider stages go to 10 × 8 ft (RM160) or 20 × 8 ft (RM320.01).

What size should an event backdrop be?

Pick the height first. Almost every backdrop in Malaysia is 8 ft (2.44 m) tall, because a 6 ft person standing in front of it still has backdrop above their head in the photo. Go shorter and your logos end up cropped behind someone's shoulders.

Then pick the width from what the backdrop has to cover:

Backdrops are priced by area, so any width and height can be ordered — the sizes above are conventions, not a fixed list. A hall stage that measures 24 ft is simply priced for 24 ft.

For a wedding, the same 8 ft height applies. Width is usually driven by the table or arch it sits behind, most often somewhere between 8 and 12 ft.

How to hang a backdrop: pocket, eyelets or a frame

This is the decision most people get wrong, because it is made at the printer and cannot be changed afterwards. There are three ways to hold a backdrop up.

A pocket is a sewn sleeve along the edge that a pole or crossbar slides through. This is what you want for a truss or a pipe-and-drape stand — it spreads the load along the whole edge, so the backdrop hangs flat with no puckering between fixing points.

Eyelets and rope are metal rings punched around the edge with rope threaded through, for tying onto a frame, railing or scaffold. More flexible about what you tie it to, but the backdrop pulls at each ring rather than along the edge.

A white border leaves an unprinted margin so the artwork is not cut into by whatever clamps the edge.

Here is what each adds to that RM128 sheet:

"3″ Pocket Top Only" is the one most event backdrops actually need, and it is the cheapest of the four. A backdrop hung from a crossbar is held at the top; a pocket on the bottom and sides does nothing but cost money. Pick all-round only if the backdrop is being tensioned into a frame on every edge.

One thing worth understanding: a pocket or a border is not a flat fee, it grows the sheet. The printer adds the margin outside your finished size so the visible area stays what you ordered — which is why a 3″ pocket on all four edges costs more than one on a single edge.

Pop-up backdrop frames

If the backdrop travels — roadshows, exhibitions, a booth you set up every month — a printed sheet and a borrowed truss stops being practical. A pop-up frame is a concertina frame that opens in about a minute, with the graphic attached to it, and packs into a wheeled case.

Soft case is a padded bag; hard case is a wheeled moulded case that usually converts into a counter and survives being handled by event crews. If the backdrop is checked into a lorry every other week, the hard case is the cheaper decision over a year.

Note the height: a pop-up frame is 2.3 m, slightly under the 2.44 m of a hung sheet. There is also a fabric display route, where the graphic is a stretch fabric skin that zips over an aluminium frame and can be machine washed.

How to design a backdrop

• Build the document at full size — 2440 × 2440 mm for an 8 × 8 ft — at 100–150 dpi. Large-format print is viewed from metres away; 300 dpi here is a huge file that buys you nothing. If the file gets unwieldy, work at 25% scale (610 × 610 mm) at 400 dpi and say so when you order.
• Keep logos and text inside a safe area. Leave at least 3–4 inches clear of every edge, more if you are using an all-round pocket, because that margin physically wraps around a pole.
• Put the logos where heads are not. The bottom third of a press wall is occupied by people. Repeat logos in a staggered grid across the upper two-thirds so at least one is always fully visible in a photo.
