What a mesh banner is, and when you need one
A mesh banner is PVC-coated polyester with a regular pattern of small holes across the whole sheet, printed with the same UV ink as a solid flex banner. The holes are the point. A solid 20 × 4 ft banner on a construction hoarding catches every gust, pulls at its eyelets, and either tears or takes the fence with it. The same banner in mesh lets most of the wind straight through, so it stays taut and the fixings stay put.
Use mesh when the banner is:
- on a fence, hoarding or gate — the classic site-perimeter banner
- on scaffolding or a building wrap — large, high and fully exposed
- on a rooftop or zigzag frame — where wind is strongest and a fall is dangerous
- above the first floor on any building
- at a stadium, sports field or open-air event, where nothing shelters it
Use solid flex instead when the banner sits flat against a wall, hangs under a shop awning, or is indoors — anywhere there is no wind to manage. Solid flex costs less and prints denser colour, because a mesh sheet is partly holes.

Eyelets: the finishing that matters on mesh
A mesh banner is almost always going somewhere windy, so the finishing is not a detail. Four corner eyelets are included and are fine up to about 3 × 6 ft in a sheltered spot. Beyond that, choose eyelets every 2–3 ft around the full perimeter: it spreads the wind load along the whole edge, so no single eyelet takes the strain. On a 4 × 8 ft mesh banner that is RM101.93 instead of RM95.99, and it is the difference between a banner that lasts the campaign and one you replace after the first storm.
Tie with cable ties or rope through every eyelet, not just the corners. A mesh banner fixed at four points behaves like a solid one.
How to design for mesh
The holes change what prints well. Part of every mesh sheet is open, so:
- Make everything bigger and bolder. Thin strokes, light typefaces and fine detail break up across the holes. A headline that reads at 60 ft on solid flex wants to be a size up on mesh.
- Use high contrast. Colours look lighter and less saturated than on solid flex, because you are seeing background through the holes. Dark text on a light ground, or light on a dark solid, survives; mid-tones on mid-tones do not.
- Expect the background to show. A white area of the design will take on the colour of whatever is behind the mesh. On a green construction fence, a white background reads greenish. Design with that in mind or use a solid colour ground.
- Skip photographs unless they are large and simple. A face at 2 ft high works; a detailed product shot at 20 cm does not.

Mesh in Malaysian weather
Heat, daily rain and humidity are the conditions every outdoor banner in Malaysia lives in, and mesh handles them the same way solid flex does: PVC does not absorb water, and UV-cured ink is designed for sun. What mesh does better is survive the wind that comes with the afternoon storm, because it does not load up like a sail.
The failure you will actually see is not fading but dirt and mould in the holes on a banner left up for months in a shaded, damp spot. A rinse with a hose and a soft brush brings it back. Mesh fabric: the indoor and flag alternative
There is a second kind of mesh: mesh polyester fabric, printed by dye-sublimation rather than UV ink.
